How to Choose the Right Kathak Dance Costume for Your Child's School Performance

Kathak is one of India's most beautiful classical dance forms — and when your child performs it at school, the costume matters almost as much as the choreography. The right Kathak dress helps them move freely, looks stunning under stage lights, and gives them the confidence to perform at their best.

Here's what to look for.

## Style: Anarkali vs Lehenga

Most Kathak costumes come in two styles — anarkali (a long flared dress in one piece) or lehenga-choli (a separate skirt and blouse). For school performances and competitions, anarkali style is more popular because it's easier to put on quickly backstage and the single-piece design reduces the chance of anything coming loose during spins and chakkars. Lehenga style looks a little more traditional and works well for stage recitals where the child has more prep time.

## Colours That Work on Stage

Under stage lighting, some colours look amazing and others wash out completely. The best colours for Kathak performances are deep jewel tones — red and gold, purple and silver, green and gold, blue and gold. Pastels can look faded under bright lights. If you're not sure, go with a classic red and gold combination — it's the most traditional Kathak colour and always looks rich on stage.

## Fabric — What Actually Matters

The fabric needs to do two things: look good and survive an energetic 10-year-old spinning at full speed. Shiny polyester satin is the most common choice — it catches stage light beautifully and is durable enough for multiple washes. Net underlayers in the skirt add flare without adding weight, which is important for long performances. Avoid heavy silk blends for children — they get too hot under stage lighting.

## The Gota Work and Embellishments

Golden gota work on the border and blouse is the signature look of a Kathak costume. Don't go overboard with heavy stonework or beading — it adds weight and can be uncomfortable for long performances. Clean border work with a well-embellished blouse is the sweet spot.

## Getting the Size Right

Kathak costumes are typically sold by age or height. Our advice: always go one size up from your child's current age size. Children grow fast and the extra room also gives them freedom of movement during spins. The dupatta (scarf) is usually tucked in at the waist during performance so loose fabric there is not a problem.

## Boys Kathak Costume

Boys wearing Kathak costume typically wear a churidar (fitted trousers) with a longer kurta in rich fabric, often with gold embroidery on the collar and cuffs. The colour palette is similar — deep tones with gold work. A matching dupatta completes the look.

## One Last Tip

If your child's school is ordering multiple Kathak costumes for a group performance, bulk pricing is usually available. Most costume shops — including ours — offer discounted rates for orders of 5 or more pieces. It's worth asking the teacher to coordinate a group order.
