Navratri is one of the most colourful celebrations in India, and when schools organise Garba or Dandiya events, parents want their children to look the part. Here's what you actually need to know before buying.

## What a Garba Costume Should Have

A proper Garba costume for a school event has three essential elements: a lehenga that flares well when the child spins, a choli (blouse) with mirror work or embroidery, and a dupatta. The mirror work — called shisha embroidery — is what gives Garba costumes their signature sparkle. Under the lights of a school auditorium or outdoor stage, this mirror work reflects beautifully and makes the group look spectacular.

## Colours for Navratri

Navratri has nine days with nine traditional colours — red, royal blue, yellow, green, grey, orange, white, pink, and purple. If your school follows the day-wise colour tradition, confirm which day your child's event falls on and buy accordingly. If the event is a general Garba performance, bright jewel tones — red, orange, yellow — always look best on stage.

## Dandiya Sticks

Don't forget the sticks! A Garba performance without dandiya sticks looks incomplete. Get sticks that are the right length for your child's height — too long and they'll hit each other during the dance, too short and the choreography won't look right.

## What to Avoid

Heavy lehengas with too many layers look beautiful in photos but are exhausting for children to dance in for a full performance. Choose designs that are full enough to flare but not so heavy that they restrict movement. Also avoid costumes with too much stonework on the hemline — stones tend to fall off during Garba's energetic footwork.

## For Younger Children

For children under 6, a simple half-lehenga with a comfortable blouse is plenty. They need maximum freedom of movement and minimum discomfort. Keep it light and colourful.
