Dussehra & Ramleela Costumes 2026: Ram, Sita, Ravan, Hanuman

Ramleela 2026 runs from 11 to 20 October, ending with Dussehra (Vijayadashami) on Tuesday 20 October. School Dussehra programmes and fancy dress rounds usually fall in the days before. Whether you are dressing one child as Hanuman or a committee's whole cast for a ten-night run, here is what each main character needs, what to look for in the costume, and how renting works in Delhi.
Ram: crowned king or forest exile?
Decide which Ram the script needs first, because the two look nothing alike.
- Raja Ram is the crowned king of Ayodhya, for the coronation scene or leading the Dussehra procession. Our Raja Ram dress is a red kurta with a gold zari yoke, mirror work and a fringed hem.
- Vanvasi Ram is the Ram of the fourteen years in the forest, dressed plainly in saffron. The Vanvasi Ram fancy dress comes with a bow and a quiver, so the child has something to hold through a speaking scene.
For Dashrath, Janak or any other king in the court, the Hindu Raja costume with dhoti and crown covers it. There is no separate Lakshman costume in our range. A second Vanvasi set works, ideally with a different coloured garland so the audience can tell the brothers apart.
Sita: Ayodhya queen or vanvas saree
The same rule applies. For the palace and swayamvar scenes, the Rani Sita costume is in gold and jewel tones. For the forest, Panchavati and Ashok Vatika scenes, the vanvasi Sita saree is a plain saffron saree with a cream and gold border, for girls aged 3 to 9. It also doubles as a Meera Bai costume.
Hanuman: pick by the role
Hanuman is one of the most popular Ramleela parts, and a school play often has several Hanumans on stage. Choose by how big the part is:
- Vanar sena or a young child: the Hanuman ji fancy dress is a light red top and shorts with gold trim. It is easy to run and jump in and costs ₹650 to buy or ₹450 to rent.
- Lead role: the red velvet Hanuman costume has gold zari stripes and a jewelled yoke that catches hall lighting.
- Standing apart from the other Hanumans: the yellow Hanuman dress in mustard gold looks different next to a row of red ones.
Every Hanuman needs a gada. Our foam Hanuman gada looks heavy on stage but is safe for children to swing.
Ravan: the costume, the mukut and the mask
Ravan is the part older children enjoy most. The Ravan fancy dress is black with gold booti print, a jewelled yoke and gold fringe. Black and gold is the classic Lankesh palette and reads as the villain from the back row.
The ten-head Ravan mukut makes the look. We don't list a mukut on the website, so WhatsApp us to ask what we have in the shop before your event. If you are making one at home, a ten-head crown cut from card and painted gold works on stage, provided it is light. A heavy mukut slips, and a child can't deliver lines while holding it up. Keep a mask or mukhota short enough for the child to see their feet, and check that they can speak clearly through it.
Meghnath, Kumbhkaran and the rest of Lanka
- Meghnath, also called Indrajit, is in royal blue with gold zari. It is built like the Ravan costume so the two look related on stage.
- Kumbhkaran is in heavy black velvet with gold and white embroidery, to suit the giant.
- For battle scenes, add a shield and sword set, a drama sword or the triple bhala spears. All are light props made for stage use.
The supporting cast
A Ramleela often needs characters parents struggle to find:
- Jatayu: the Jatayu costume is a white fur jumpsuit with an eagle mask and feather wings.
- Jaamvant: the Jaamvant costume is a black fur jumpsuit with a bear head mask that sits back off the face, so the child can speak.
- Rishis and munis: the Rishi fancy dress is a saffron dhoti with an angavastram, for Vishwamitra, Vashishtha, Valmiki or Narad.
- Opening vandana: the Ganesh costume comes complete with mask, mukut and axe.

For kids or for adults?
Most of our Ramleela costumes are sized for school-age children, and the size is listed on each product page where we have it. We also keep some adult sizes. If you are dressing adult actors, WhatsApp us the roles and sizes and we'll tell you what fits before you travel.
Ramleela costumes on rent for committees and schools
A ten-night Ramleela is exactly the case where renting beats buying. Here is how it works:
- Rent is per event, normally one to two days. For a multi-day run or rehearsals on separate days, tell us the dates. Extra days can be arranged for a small additional charge.
- A refundable deposit is taken with the rent and returned in full when the costumes come back. The deposit for each costume is on its product page.
- Groups of ten or more get group rates. Committees and schools can send the full character list on WhatsApp (+91 99537 64137) and we will put a package together. For school-scale orders, see our wholesale page for schools.
- Try sizes at our shop at S64, South Anarkali, Som Bazar, Krishna Nagar, a five-minute walk from Krishna Nagar Metro on the Pink Line. We're open 10 AM to 9:30 PM every day. We can also send costumes by Porter or Rapido anywhere in Delhi NCR.
Book early. October is peak season. Book at least a week before your first show, and two weeks ahead for a full cast. That way there is time to swap a size.
Quick checklist
- Which Ram and which Sita does the script need: palace or forest?
- Props sorted: bow for Ram, gada for Hanuman, mukut for Ravan
- Mask or mukut tested so the child can see and speak
- Costume tried on a week before the show
- Rental return date agreed if the run is longer than two days
